Almost 16

January 31st, 2008

Samantha Almost 16

Our beautiful daughter, almost 16.  every year just before she changes her age, i shoot Polaroids. titled “almost” . I started when she was almost 4, then almost 5, then 6.   now 16.  always a difficult shoot. always manual, no metering, no electronics or flash.  these were taken with a 1950’s era crown graphic on type 79 Polaroid.  I think maybe i shoot this project on the eve of her change as a way of trying to hold her back and stall the inevitable. as you can see they grow up regardless of our efforts.

love it when a couple just lets me do what i do and explore.   We had so much fun out at a dry lake bed that i wasn’t to familiar with but had a little different character then the Jean bed.    This Bridal was just fun and full of energy. these first two are my continuing study of one of Cartier-Bresson’s images.  Yeah if you havent noticed I’ve been making that a theme and study.

Big Thanks to Fotoworks

Our bridal show booth was a big success, thanks to Sam at fotoworks for helping us out with 88  beautifully printed 20×20’s.  Our new booth and display system held up well.  All white borders on one side, black on the other, and each section can be spun.  thanks sam.

Tour Update

January 26th, 2008

An Update for our Tour

Atlanta July 31st, is sold out and we opened the 2nd day for that city which will most likely go very fast.  We are being hosted at the Atlanta stop by the one and only Zack Arias of OneLightWorkshop fame.  Also we will be announcing the DENVER area stop soon.    We are considering adding two more cities that are in our direct path: Phoenix and Dallas, so if you are interested in those areas stay tuned (or if you are interested in hosting in those cities email me at jmc@altf.com) .  Thanks to all those that signed up so far, it looks like the tour is going to be one rock’n time.  (of course a few tricks are up our sleeves).   .john.  veryaltf.com

Totally Rad

Doug and Chenin- our co-conspirators of the antiworkshop are posting their recipe cards for their TRA’s (that totally rad actions) We submitted one, along with several groovy photographers, and the Boutwells have been posting them up on their blogs.  If you want to know my retouch method go chenin’s blog (I’ve typed in the recipe in the comments section in case its hard to read them.  Its difficult to write with something stapled to your hand….  small altf trivia, I use to hang out and shoot pro-body piercers and performance artists - suspensions and the like (that’s how I got the idea of stapling the cardboard to my hand.)   Also, if  you please… go to doug’s blog and tell him that you know what the F stands for in altf - I think you can win 20 points or something.

No Where in Particular

January 19th, 2008

Sam and Ros, no where in particular.  exploring a thought from a conversation with Jesh De Rox while being motivated and inspired by  David Williams.  Still forming the concept, but this is good start.  Its nice to have kids when its time to experiment.  BTW the last frame had nothing to do with the idea, for some reason i told them to crawl like a tiger, be the tiger…… and they did, sometimes i make them do things just to amuse me…

The work you guys do is beautiful. Your girls are beautiful. I always enjoy these. :)

  3. Kate Mefford from Juxtapose Photography

DAMN, they look exactly like you guys. That is scary cool. Scary like a tiger. Rawwwwr.

  4. Dror

I think we all sometimes make people do things just to amuse ourselves. I could tell you stories about a certain photographer in South Africa …

 Monica and Sean

A sultry location and one sultry couple.  These two just seem perfect for my dark and moody style. Shot entirely in the lobby of Red Rock Casino, which by the way is probably the coolest off strip hotel in Vegas.
