blog update

a lot to blog about.
As some may know, I have been traveling just a little bit during these past 2 weeks. First to Sweden and then Canada.  With being out of the country for the better part of the time, I’ve fallen a little behind on things…   Namely some blog posts and some wedding work.  So over the next couple of days I’m hoping to catch up with not just several awesome weddings but some very exciting announcements.  So a quick catch up before I get to the blog posts:  First, if you want to win an engagement session from us and an awesome coordinator for the day then be sure to head over to Green Orchid Events for the info.   I have more images from Sweden coming along with a cool session that I did of Jenny and Robert over looking Gothenburg.         As for the Canada trip - I had the pleasure of being a surprise special guest for the amazing Jesh De Rox at one of his workshops. I have a lot to post about for that and - of course, several images. The workshop was amazing…. Some updates for our very altF tour: we will be adding one more stop hosted by some hella cool photographers.  Speaking of the tour we also announced a personal project that was inspired by David Williams on the DWF in which we will be doing during our tour…  more on that project later.   As if all that is not enough, we have been interviewed a couple of times in between all this, namely a video interview by someone who I think is one of the most influential wedding photographers of our time.    So stay tuned over the next couple of days for a flood of posts…

Melissa and Rob.

Another beautiful wedding at the Paiute.  I like the Paiute because it shows off how beautiful the desert can be rather then hiding it behind some waterfalls…  I especially like all of the joshua trees and wild flowers.  At the top, Melissa and Rob seem so content and together in the flowers which happens to be my favorite image from their wedding.

B.C. and Colleen

How to define cool, well B.C. and Colleen would be a good starting point.  Everything just seemed so hip and stylish at their wedding at Red Rock Station and with a reception at Cherry Night Club..   My favorite part, well that was Colleen’s super sexy dress from Couture Bride that just called out 40’s Hollywood glamour.

JMC - these are awesome. She looks amazing and I love how her style inspired these pictures. Rock on my friend. Miss you guys.

  2. kerri mcconnell

    seriously cool… love it…

  3. Dalisa

I have to add in my 2 cents… besides the last image (taken by a truly amazing photographer…aaahhh hhhmm) the second image is my absolute favorite! Colleen’s expression and the way she is standing with her hand there makes you wonder what her thought was right at that moment. I love just the slight show of BC’s hand - enough to let you know he’s there. Brilliant Shot!

A very pink wedding at a very cool location:  The Las Vegas Art Museum.

This couple were so free spirited and friendly - I truly enjoyed the day.  I will let the images speak for themselves…080502-1139.jpg080502-1125.jpg080502-1747.jpg080502-1768.jpg

Gothenburg Rocks

Göteborg rockar fett

Yes, Gothenburg ROCKS!  This week I had the chance, for the first time, to visit Europe and namely - Sweden.  Scandinavian Photo, a super cool camera store, brought me out to Gothenburg to speak for 2 days of their workshop.  Beautiful city, friendly people, and talented photographers.  A Nikon rep was there on day one to lend me any lens in the Nikon’s arsenal, a 200 f2, 200-400, sb800’s, and of-course D3’s ….. what a toybox of gear we had..  even top of the line lighting from Profoto which we used both days to over power the sun.   Day 2 was special for me because I had the chance to remember some of my roots and shoot on medium format cameras.  Martin, a rep for PhaseOne let me shoot on the first ever PhaseOne Camera in the world. If you’ve never shot medium format cameras before you are in for a treat.    The files are so sharp and so large (39mp!) that I could count every eyelash and goosebump on the models. (I’ll post more about that on the dwf soon) .  Along with the PhaseOne camera, Martin gave me a chance to go down memory lane with a Hasselblad 501cm sporting a p45 back (Gothenburg is home to Hasselblad), I felt like a kid again.   Thanks to everyone who attended, everyone at Scandinavian Photo, and special thanks to Jenny Blad who was my guide while I was there and who also arranged the entire wonderful experience, (I’ll post her session with her cool husband, Robert, soon) .  I’m starting to miss Sweden already.  The following are some of my favorites from the workshop.

It rocked having u here John Michael! I felt really sad when u left. I never spend time with my friends - either i´m to busy or I don´t have the energy. Now I had u to hang out with for three days in a row - so it felt like I lost a friend when u left - even though we hardly know eachother! Maybe this will be my alarm clock to start making time for my friends or I won´t have any left!

I know u can check out the pictures on the attending peoples blogs but apart from Erikas (who write in english) u won´t understand them. To translate what I have seen on all of the blogs is that everyone are overexcited and happy about the workshop!

I hope i´ll see u again sometime in the future!

    Hugs on ya!!!

  2. Petra Hall

    John,
I couldn’t make it to Gothenburg (it’s a bit too long of a travel - expensive), but I know how excited Jenny has been planning this and how happy she was when it was over, that it was such a huge success!

I hope you and your better half could come to Sweden again and visit, and perhaps we can meet half way - in Stockholm or something.

Love your images from the workshops!

  3. Karin Linde

Thank you so much for the workshop! It really inspired me and made me start rethinking things in my business - starting to see outside the box :-)

I’ll email you the picture I shot of you and the BIG lens soon as well.

    Thanks again!

DWFC 09

Big NEWs!

It is not just a convention for wedding photographers, the DWFConvention is “the” convention for the worlds most progressive and edgy wedding photographers period.  And…..  Guess what?  For the 3rd time we have been asked to speak and present at this industry leading event, and we are in a headline role along side of some of our favorite photographers… The best of the best will be there…  What are we going to do? Well, for the 1st convention, we shot a real wedding, made a  full flushmount album overnight that was presented by a GI-Joe ninja, played with inflatable palm trees and we showed off a Bride on Fire.  For the 2nd convention we went out into the desert along with world famous David Beckstead, and we stuffed a bride in a trunk with a shovel carrying groom just after we tossed a camera 30′ and dropped it (we sold that camera for charity) and the shovel went on to travel the world and get its own website…..     And what do we have planned for the ‘09 convention?  We’ll show you everything we can do in the DARK.  Well…. maybe not everything…

Brittany and Devin

San Diego, CA and La Jolla.   What can I say, just beautiful places… throw a good looking couple in the mix that happens to be triathletes  and this extended engagement session yields just too many good images to be held in this blog.  So, thanks to David Jay, I’ve recently started to play around with some slide show software for the web…  take a look at their slide show HERE.  Also, I’ve just started to tweek down some custom presets which hopefully will make my tight workflow even tighter… Brittany and Devin, I hope you don’t mind me experimenting on your images.  Its just about that time again to re-invent myself.

John - oh my goodness. We had high expectations and you’ve BLOWN US AWAY! I can’t even begin to describe the coolness level of all of this. Your images are EXTRAORDINARY.

That slideshow is WICKED. The timing to the tune is very tight & very cool; the image storyline is fantastic.

    Re-invent yourself with us anytime!

John, these photos rock. The last few on the beach are my favorites, and I love the look you gave to processing of the images.

  4. Heather Cole

    John,

These are RIDIC! I love them all. ME-OW!

  5. kerri & rick

    love them!

what an awesome tree! hot couple too! ;)

  6. Scott Piner

Dang, that’s a big tree. And the one lying in the sand reminds me of the David Yurman ads which I love. I use ShowIt for almost all of my sessions as it’s a great way to market. I also add a Stat Counter (http://statcounter.com/) code to the index.html file and track how far the slide show travels.

  7. Jen Grasser

One of my favorite shoots thus far. Just…WOW.
