Katie & Jon - How excited was I to receive a request from Katie on a quote for engagement photos?? Alright.. let me bring you up to speed to help answer that question….

Katie - is “Katie from Fotoworks” - the best lab on the West coast that processes some of the most amazing photographers prints on a daily basis. Not only do they take on an extreme amount of pressure from these amazing artists but they deliver in a very competitive market. Katie is the main face when it comes to customer service - the front line gal… with a fantastic attitude and talent all in one.

So for her to choose us…. ya, that’s sayin’ somethin’!….
Needless to say, the shoot went great - you really can’t go wrong with such a great looking couple! Congrats, Katie & Jon - I wish nothing but the best for you and your nuptials! Wish we could be there!!

wow! speechless!

Aspen, Co
While in New Orleans hanging out with, undoubtedly, some of the coolest wedding photographers on the planet, I was chatting with Joe Photo about a personal art project to challenge myself and my skill at a wedding. Joe asks if I have a wedding on the coming Saturday, I say no, and he says I have a wedding in Aspen - come and shoot it with me… ummmm yeah… (big thanks to my beautiful wife for allowing me to jet set a little).
Laine and Bill.
2nd shooting for the ultra hip Joe Photo in Aspen at a beautiful private estate with a gorgeous bride and groom….. what could get better? It rained, which added that extra special feeling and mood. Did you know that I absolutely love rainy day weddings?

So while 2nd shooting for Joe with one camera (my primary) I decided to split my shooting personality and attempt (at the same time) to try my project. This project: “50 frames” is an idea that has been sitting in my head for some time now, the gist of it is to shoot a wedding while only clicking the shutter 50 times. To challenge myself to become an even more aware shooter and to see if I could represent a wedding story with only 50 clicks, keeping every frame, good or bad. While shooting with my primary camera for Joe, I had my backup camera loaded with a very small CF, the preview LCD screen gaff taped up and the menu functions and delete buttons all inaccessible. 50 frames, no reviewing to see if I got the shot or not. Almost like I was shooting film again.
Below is just one of the frames from that camera. Though I think I did well with the project and it proves the fundamental concept in my head, I considered this a mild failure because I got distracted with such a beautiful wedding and I was just happy and excited to be 2nd shooting with Joe that I didn’t put a whole lot of attention toward the project. In the end, I only shot 36 frames on the taped up camera (which, ironically is the amount of frames on a 35mm roll of film). If you want to see all 36 frames from the project click here.

One Big Thank You to Joe Photo, for allowing me to tag along and shoot with one of the giants of our industry… thank you!

WOW! Absolutely gorgeous. The first photo is incredibly striking. I got to see Joe’s stuff too - the bride is going to be thrilled with the coverage of her wedding!
you are your hardest critic. that’s almost as hard as doing 1,000 push-ups non-stop. way to challenge yourself!
these are absolutely spectacular! I love what you did with your lighting in the first shot. Totally amazing! Love them all!
I am still reeling from my project as a guest only allowed 50 frames! link. Thanks for the brilliant idea.
these are off the charts of bad a$$…killer

More from New Orleans ….. we know you wanted to see more…..

Here is the always super cool Joe Photo…. So you know this is what Joe looks like after a Party in the French Quarter. Some PWL action here.

And the next day… i volunteered another photographer Renee to model in one of the cool graveyards in the French Quarter. These two are shot during the day with our signiture SFMF technique.

I loved all of them! It was so much fun…even if we were in a cemetary! The first image in the post is stunning….love the actions on it. They really brought it to life.

BEAUTIFUL PICTURE!
I just love it!
omg is the second girl Teri!
your work is beautiful!

I absolutely love the texture and life that Eliana’s dress took on all by itself. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was going to be even more amazing once she put it on.

After an impeccable ceremony, John was chomping at the bit to get on with the portraits of these two….

A beautiful couple - we are looking forward to their bridal session…

Thanks Cliff & Eliana - it was an overall gorgeous day.

The above image has found a place on JMC’s trophy shelf as the best of this year - and might even be an all time favorite… he absolutely loves everything about this image. It’s always a sweet victory when he impresses himself. This one is going on a canvas in our gallery.
Devin & Brittany’s wedding was a treat for us… there was a great moment waiting to be captured every single time we turned around. I would show them all to you if I could… for now, a few favorites will do…

Beautiful Bridesmaids…

Devin’s father is a deacon and performed a flawless ceremony - here is a quiet moment just before it all started.

We jump with joy at the mention of shooting in California… the light is always great and you can’t really ask for better settings.

We rarely show off formals - but this was a fun one that required a bit of pre-visualization on JMC’s behalf… making a great spread for their wedding album.

Thank you, Brittany and Devin. Your day was a pleasure to be a part of.

I love the one of them just entering the chapel - very suspenseful!
John & Dalisa,
Our big day was nothing but magical and it was an absolute pleasure having you two there to share in it with us. It is a wonderful thing that our biggest “problem” from the day is that we have so many amazing image to choose from! Thank you so much!
With much love ~
Devin & Brittany
These are AWESOME! Love the ones with the bride on the boat - amazing stuff!
John & Dalisa,
You both continue to amaze me! The shots on the boat are incredible!!! Awesome work!
LOVE the shot before the ceremony. very powerful images all around.
Formals are seldom a rewarding thing to do, but here you managed to create something special, great work!
John and Dalisa rock, John and Dalisa rock - love it guys! I can’t wait to hear the story behind the favorite image of the year… ![]()
i love this whole set john, especially the bride walking in the church. the mission in san diego is one of my all time favorite places to shoot. you absolutely nailed the feel of the place. no surprise there.
hope you’re off to a great year. take care.

Hey John, I can’t stop staring at those first 2 images. You are truly an inspiration. Would you mind sharing if those are “painted” or if they’re multi-frame captures or something?
Dang! I wish I was there to learn from you guys how to do this! Amazing and totally inspiring work, as always!
John,
Thanks again for teaching us at the ImageX workshop. It was a pleasure getting to know you and getting a better understanding of your work.
Love the third one down. What great textures in the Big Easy!
the one of the girl with the chair—reminds me of Van Goghs Cafe Terrace-
Everytime I see new images from you it seems like your skills have improved. That is certainly amazing considering you are already freakishly talented!
I was looking at your first pic on this post and thought…”wow, that looks sooooo familiar”, but it wasn’t till my husband walked over and told me it was from New Orleans. We just came back from there. In fact, I tried to have a nice little portrait session with my beautiful 22 yr old sister, because there is soooo much character in the sceneries…but it was a wasted effort due to all the horney toads down there that wouldn’t leave us alone. We even walked away from the crowed areas…but they still found us. Even the cops acted like they’d never seen a good looking woman before. UG! Did you have any problems with your beautiful bride?
Oh…lovely photos by the way. Forgot to mention that in the last post….which was me initial reason for wanting to post a comment. You rock!
Hey John, It was an honor meeting you and watching you work at the ImageX workshop. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Loved learning about painting with light, thank you for teaching.
Hi John,
