Emily and Nick

March 26th, 2010

Emily and Nick!  These two had such great poise that every pose they fell into looked like it was ready for a fashion ad.  Even thier two dogs played well with the camera, although I think they were really just waiting patiently for their turn to run and pull in a desert version of the Iditarod. - check out nick’s cool toy at the bottom of the post…  Wonder if can get my dogs to pull me..

Theresa and Kyle

March 23rd, 2010

If you met my darling friend, Ricci, than you would know what a wedding advocate she is - so when her dear friends, Theresa and Kyle, announced their engagement there was no hesitation on perfecting the plans!  Below is one of my fav bouquet shots - Harley just had to make his way into the spot light!

a little Bridal party action..

And the ceremony - I caught some killer light on these

Cascata Golf Course proved to be an excellent location for this gorgeous event.  Floral By Destinations By Design.  Cake by Layers Bakery

Thanks for being such great subjects, Kyle and Theresa!  Have fun in Austin!

The Black Train - 1931 Bentley 8 litre

March 19th, 2010

“The Black Train”.  This 1931 8 litre Bentley is a sister car to the very famous “Blue Train” (which ironically is green, british racing green to be exact.)  This one of a kind drophead version of its famous sibling, is black and it is one bad ass car.  Check out the engine below, a rare 8 litre engine, you can almost hear it growl.  It sounds so good when it is on….

and of course a dashboard shot..

I don’t think I ever stopped to look at and appreciate automotive photography before I discovered your blog. You make everything you photograph look so interesting and amazing. That car is super sweeeeet!

  3. Jason

Spent some time watching the link from facebook earlier today while you were doing the highpass and wall crack fixes. Amazing stuff. Learned a ton from watching the edit on new tech. i might incorporate. Better than photoshop TV:)

  4. Nicole Miller

Very cool–LOVE the shadow cast on the wall.

  5. Rita

Hey John, you got a big ole studio just so you could shoot fancy cars didn’t you? :)

  6. Michael Kent - Philadelphia Wedding Photographer

I watched part of this on your live edits. The finished look is incredible. Thanks for letting us watch your work flow.

Mindy

March 18th, 2010

For a couple of years now I have wanted to build a simple wall set as an homage to the great Irving Penn. Well, I’ve kept putting it off.  That all ended when I got a call from Mindy who wanted something a little different for her PR shot.  So off to Home Depot for some supplies and…. presto! a simple little corner.  I’m really not sure what intrigues me about Irving Penn’s images that were shot in the “corner” but I intend to find out by exploring and experimenting all this month with this simple background..  Mindy’s PR images, the reason for getting the idea in gear, is my first use of it and I’ve twisted it just a little.  If you are not familiar with Irving Penn, just google him under images and I’m sure you’ll understand why his images are so iconic.

  6. shani

ok, so it’s been a few months, and I don’t know what made me think of it, but I thought your platform at wppi was mind bowing - the sketches and the images you took during the event and how it all came together in the end has been engraved in my mind eve since. I also loved you shooting digitl without the screen- I actually taped my camera till I realised i had to first format my card and make sure it was empty..but anyway - just saying thanks- it was a truly inspiring presentation and I love your work! thanks

Tanya and Rod - Rhyolite

March 5th, 2010

Tanya and Rod suggested this surreal ghost town for their engagement shoot.  The history and beauty of it swept us away.

Isn’t Tanya super hot?  I personally think she has a Carmen Electra/Fergie look to her

Khloe and Kaiser came along for the ride - they are two of the sweetest dogs!

The entire shoot had this quite, calming effect that we often miss out on.  You can feel the history and imagine the events that once took place in Rhyolite - it’s crazy to believe it was such a booming town in the early 1900’s

And the last is my fav - such a stunning couple!

  3. Alyssa Andrew-Swift

love the location & that last pic is amazing!

  4. Jason Hudson

I shot Kori’s bridal portraits there the day after you guys photographed our Vegas wedding. The thing I remember most about Rhyolite is that it is the only place I have ever heard 100% absolute silence. No vehicles, planes, animals, motorcycles, people, nothing. Just silence. It was wonderful.

  5. Alicia Lunch

Absolutely awesome, as always. That is such a cool setting for a very stunning couple. Excellent job you guys!

  6. Alexia

You two make the hottest couple ever! My very fav. is the last one where the sun is shining in TT’s hair. Hooray for love!!

Gwenn and Brian

March 4th, 2010

We first met Gwenn and Brian in Williamsport, PA at Britney and Shawn’s wedding - it wasn’t too long after that we received an email with exciting news of their engagement.  I was head over heals when they asked us to be their wedding photographer!  And even more excited when they decided to head out to Vegas for their engagement session.

We didn’t hesitate to use 1929 Bentley that we just happened to have in our studio as a little prop

Gwenn is stunning - she has this beautiful, classy look about her.  Lori White styled her hair and make up and did amazingly as usual… I never expect anything but perfection with Lori.  Below - Brian looking striking…

Being this couples first trip to Las Vegas, we just had to hit the desert for sunset and I am so glad we did - these images are going to be quite the contradiction to the Pennsylvania setting of their August wedding… and I can’t wait!

Gwenn & Brian - we will see you in a few short months and totally looking forward to it!

  6. Elaine Gates

that last picture is seriously amazing… love the light/composition… wow!

JMC - In another life, I was a whitewater kayaking guide and befriended an old kayak designer who was really into creating new kayak designs with classic appeal and he coined the term “Nouveau-Retro.” Looking at this post, I can’t help but see how this term applies to what you created from this session - a modern twist with classic appeal. Truly something to admire and emulate bro!

Speed Six -1929 “The Alpine Express”

March 3rd, 2010

A little more car action for you automobile aficionados. 1929 Bentley Speed 6 aka: The Alpine Express.  If you attended our Grand Opening party, this was car on our cyclorama. I photographed the car a couple days later, slowly working the radio poppers into my lighting technique (it’s almost there) …  not bad for single sb800 flash ttl (via the poppers).

After doing a little sfmf action with the poppers, I decided to do a few test shots with 12×12 silk that jrlighting lent to us for the party…  image below (12×12 silk plus a profoto 7a full power).
