Hi, John! Thank you so much for speaking at WPPI, and for opening up your studio for everyone to come visit! My friend and I spoke to you briefly at the tradeshow, but we’re hoping to make it over today to say hi…see you soon! (We might have a little favor to ask…) ;)

  2. kristin korpos

I know we came by late… but we had to see the new digs… WHICH IS AWESOME! Thanks for letting us stop by… it was so great seeing both of you again!

  6. shani

ok, so it’s been a few months, and I don’t know what made me think of it, but I thought your platform at wppi was mind bowing - the sketches and the images you took during the event and how it all came together in the end has been engraved in my mind eve since. I also loved you shooting digitl without the screen- I actually taped my camera till I realised i had to first format my card and make sure it was empty..but anyway - just saying thanks- it was a truly inspiring presentation and I love your work! thanks

grand opening party — success!

February 22nd, 2010

Yes, I Have Mariachi Pants!  Thank you Jimmy and Sanne!  Our grand opening party was a huge success, not just because I was wearing some of the coolest pants ever made, but because we had so many friends, family, clients and vendors that showed up to party and support us in a 23 year old dream to have our own studio.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  If you missed the party of the year, I will give you a small recap.  We had a Cool band doing some great covers - Dean Cortez, Greg Diaz and World Famous Drummer, Joe Esposito in form Southern CA, and killer DJ - Mike from Good Vibrations - spinning and keeping the party going and lighing up the studio making it more like a club, of course we have to hand it to Randi from Naakiti for transforming our ultra cool space to an even ULTRA-ER cool place, The crew at Ice Occasions for literally cooling some hotness down, JR Lighting for equipping us with some fun toys to play with, William Pfersching for providing the delicious cuisine, Lori White for making Dalisa beautiful and finally, to Loftworks for providing a unique and exsquisite location to fit our brand, lifestyle and business.

veryaltf too!

February 20th, 2009

We have been MIA for the last few weeks but are back with some love!  So, where have we been… well, here… but super swamped with the preparation and execution of the Very Altf Too workshop (a little spin off of our very altf tour last summer).  To make things even better for us? - the ever amazing and oh-so-hot Chad and Erin Fuller of Fuller Edge Photography agreed to be our models.

JMC got some great photos - but you seriously can’t go wrong with beautiful peeps such as the Fullers!

Even after a super long day of running around Downtown, Erin’s hair and make up looked great thanks to Jolana Adamson

Thanks for helping us make our workshop such a great time!

Speaking at the DWF convention.

January 17th, 2009

This was my third time speaking at the DWF convention, which, by the way is made up of the most progressive wedding and portrait photographers in the world.  To be asked to appear and speak to this group just once is such an overwhelming honor, but for a third time…. it just leaves me speechless with gratitude.   A big thank you to those that attended the night time shooting demonstration, below are the images that we shot.

Melissa and René were so generous to model for us, if the images are beautiful it is more because they are such a gorgeous couple and not because of our special techniques.  The above image and two below images were shot with two cheap video lights.

I’ve have been a fan of old “film noir” since I was a child - watching old movies on weekends with my Mom. All of that influence is paying off..  I love, love shadow rich images.

Need soft light?  The image below was from a 4′x6′ improvised soft box from a table cloth or bed sheet. Camera all auto, flash ttl, no special math.

The image below was shot with a pocket flashlight borrowed from the audience.

Above, a group shot (wedding party) using a single flash over multiple frames. Not everyone was in the frame at the same time.

Below, some good old fashion painting with light using a video light snooted with a glove.

A special thanks to those helping me put.  Above from left to right,  Christina Smith, which I teased a little bit about being my flower girl, the ultra talented “McLellans“, Mel and Sean,  the very hip “Fullers“, Erin and Chad, and the stars of the show - Melissa and René, the blob in the middle is myself, and playing the drunk groomsman at the very right is Jeff who’s wife and my long, long time friend, Rochelle was behind the scenes operating my camera.   Also, an extra big thanks to Ray Prevost for his photoshop mastery during my demonstration…

below, more painting with light.

I went to the DWFC for the business classes, but this demonstration absolutely floored me. Thanks for sharing these techniques—your work (and generosity) is amazing.

  6. Karissa

Did you run an action to make it look that painterly or is that just from the painting with light?

  7. john michael cooper

no action on the painting with light just thats what it ends up looking like… there is however some some contrast adjustment and a little skin smoothing but thats all.

  8. Rita

Oh I am so sad I missed it. It was the one thing I was really looking forward to. Looks like it was a hit John - congrats for the zillionth time! Love ya!

the next thing up!

January 17th, 2009

Just back the other day from an amazing speaking experience, the DWF convention in AZ.  As most know, we have absolutely fallen in love with teaching and sharing the techniques and deepest secrets of our craft.   Now the next thing up on our speaking agenda will be our “veryaltf too” workshop just before WPPI on the 15th and 16th of February.  There will be loads of shooting, instruction, and not to mention, our new and improved “one day wedding workflow” (worth the price of admission by itself).

After the veryaltf workshop, we will be hanging out around WPPI and are planning a little get together Announcement coming soon (read anti-party)

Hey John, I can’t stop staring at those first 2 images. You are truly an inspiration. Would you mind sharing if those are “painted” or if they’re multi-frame captures or something?

  2. Heather Kincaid

Dang! I wish I was there to learn from you guys how to do this! Amazing and totally inspiring work, as always!

  3. Beebe Tran

    John,

Thanks again for teaching us at the ImageX workshop. It was a pleasure getting to know you and getting a better understanding of your work.

  4. robin dini

Love the third one down. What great textures in the Big Easy!

  5. Rochelle Green

the one of the girl with the chair—reminds me of Van Goghs Cafe Terrace-

  6. Dominoe Imus

Everytime I see new images from you it seems like your skills have improved. That is certainly amazing considering you are already freakishly talented!

  7. Christine May

I was looking at your first pic on this post and thought…”wow, that looks sooooo familiar”, but it wasn’t till my husband walked over and told me it was from New Orleans. We just came back from there. In fact, I tried to have a nice little portrait session with my beautiful 22 yr old sister, because there is soooo much character in the sceneries…but it was a wasted effort due to all the horney toads down there that wouldn’t leave us alone. We even walked away from the crowed areas…but they still found us. Even the cops acted like they’d never seen a good looking woman before. UG! Did you have any problems with your beautiful bride?

  8. Christine May

Oh…lovely photos by the way. Forgot to mention that in the last post….which was me initial reason for wanting to post a comment. You rock!

  9. Suwanee

Hey John, It was an honor meeting you and watching you work at the ImageX workshop. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Loved learning about painting with light, thank you for teaching.

  10. Rosanna & Wilfredo Cabrera

    Hi John,

It was a pleasure meeting you and hanging out with you. Thank you so much for photographing us. You are such an inspirational and amazing photographer. WOW! I truly love the first two images. Image X was incredible, we had so much fun. One day we would like to attend one of your workshops. Hope to see you in Vegas (WPPI). Thanks again, you are such a cool person.
