Joyce and Rick

August 30th, 2010

photography by john michael cooper, blog post by dalisa cooper

JMC is still slightly obsessed with John Singer Sargent’s El Jaleo painting which has shown in his work over the last 3 or 4  years.  This is the closest he has come in remaking the famous painting it which he was able to do after finding the perfect couple for such a project.  Joyce and Rick’s story just happens to come together over a flamenco dance and now they are soon to be wed.  You can certainly feel the romance with this couple.

And a few portraits for everyone’s viewing pleasure…

Velvet Rope - Anti-portrait

August 17th, 2010

A few years ago this family allowed us to put a spin on the traditional family portraits by transforming into super hero’s for the day.  This year, they are stars walking the red carpet.

Tivon, Kiera, Willie, Randi & Naazir.  If you know this family than you really know how suitable this is for them as they are real life super stars - amazingly giving, ethical and passionate with all that they do.  I believe the red carpet was made just for them.

Thank you to RSVP for the set up and to Tuxedo Junction for dressing the men so handsomely!

  6. taffy

this is quite a concept. That flash turned backwards is genius. Now I know that you need a twin to be a red carpet photog :) Amazing work and thanks for sharing.

  7. Suzi Lighten

Sweet Disorder in the Dress

August 15th, 2010

Delight in Disorder by Robert Herrick

A sweet disorder in the dress
Kindles in clothes a wantonness:
A lawn about the shoulders thrown
Into a fine distraction–
An erring lace, which here and there
Enthrals the crimson stomacher–
A cuff neglectful, and thereby
Ribbands to flow confusedly–
A winning wave, deserving note,
In the tempestuous petticoat–
A careless shoe-string, in whose tie
I see a wild civility–
Do more bewitch me than when art
Is too precise in every part.

We seriously can’t get enough of the gracious Ms. Ricci.  We photographed her wedding and bridal session, her pin up session and now her anti-bridal photos.  Now all we need are maternity and newborn;)  As you may or may not know, JMC has been coined as the “godfather” of the Trash the Dress phenomenon. Considering we actually don’t even offer “Trash the Dress” sessions, we find it humorous.  But we do offer anti-bridals and we do not offer them to just anyone.  Not only is there a hefty price tag attached to these but this art is more about the concept and about finding the right person.  John Michael Cooper came up with this idea just under a year ago while photographing a live concert.  Ricci was the perfect subject and when she arrived for her pin up shoot, we explained that we had finally formed the concept for her very own anti-bridal.

Amy

Blog post by Dalisa Cooper Photography by John Michael Cooper

Amy came in to assist us this time… Some of you may know that we offer private workshops for other photographers.  Included in those private workshops is a couple of instructional shoots tailored to the specific interests of the photographer attending.  In this case, JMC was sharing techniques on lighting and portraiture and Amy made a fantastic model.  This post also provides a good example of how we do our “headshots” at the Altf Studio since we do not usually share those shoots on our blog.

Not only is Amy a stunning model and fantastic friend but she has also been my hair stylist for at least 9 years now.  If you are local and looking for someone who is amazing at color and adverse and current with cuts and styling, definitely go see her at Liasons Salon.

Stephenie and Jason

July 7th, 2010

photography and blog post by john michael cooper

A studio engagement session.  Shooting in the studio is always a challenge, that’s why I’ve wanted one for all of my career.  Absent a great vista, the brilliant desert skies, and the classic western sunset, the portraits have to be all about the dynamic between the couple, no crutch of a beautiful background to help save the day.  As you can see below, Jason and Stephenie are just that, a fun and dynamic couple who’s laughter and smiles takes over the images and lets you know exactly what kind of fun people they are.  If the wedding comes out half as fun as this session was, then it is going to be one hell of a day!  Can’t wait!

shellene and jeff - studio

May 11th, 2010

photography and blog post by john michael cooper

A little pre-wedding day studio session for Shellene and Jeff.  It is getting harder and harder for me not to consider our new studio as a “day light studio” . Technically, I don’t think it qualifies as a “day light studio” but from about 9am to about 5pm - if I roll up the bay door, I get this beautiful light on the cyc wall (above) and no need for other lights or reflectors or any other tricks… just beautiful clean light. Needless to say I’m loving the new studio, and especially more when I have a couple like Shellene and Jeff that make it feel more like a studio fashion shoot rather then a studio bridal..

.john.

Just because we are shooting in a studio doesn’t mean that I’m not going to pop outside for a few shots..

Back inside and switch from pure natural light to busting out our old hollywood lights.  Can you tell we love shadows!

And below: the last images on the temporary wall we put up to study and pay homage to the great Irving Penn.

So hilarious but Shellene and I were just emailing each other back and forth discussing how we can’t wait for photos…and poof, there they are 2 minutes later! Fantastic job guys!

  2. Tracey Kumer-Moore

LUST, LOVE, admiration for these. The Hollywood lighting images are spectacular. The opposite shadow images; very clever.
