day 9 Memphis!

Memphis.  Big thanks to Jake Morrow for hosting us, Lisa for allowing us to park at her house, and Rob, Olivia, Jack and Sophie for entertaining our dogs while we played with the memphis crew.    above is Savannah and Phillip for our engagement demo (they are getting married in a couple of weeks - congrats.)

080728-0942.jpg

Below a concept shot based around some conversations about memphis, a small bit of research, and of course me wanting to play with an iconic image.   Darius and Savannah played models for us and i made it a 5 frame multiple flash shot with a single sb800.

First of all, that multiple flash shot of Darius and Savannah ROCKS. So cool. Second, I just wanted to thank you guys for posting the videos in addition to the photos. It’s so fun to get to see what the shoot looks like, the lighting, where the photographers are situated versus what the photos look like. Plus, seeing John down on the ground shooting and seeing his students shooting all around him is a kick. Thanks!!

  2. Ricky Gulati - Memory Lane Video

Hello out there my traveling gypsies! Come home soon please! Glad to see you’re having fun, I’m so addicted to watching, it’s kind of like big brother! Nonetheless, Vegas is not the same without you two, but it looks are if you’re having too much fun. Miss you guys.
    Ricky

  3. Markie Mark

Oh my god, you guys are killing it! What an incredible adventure! And to share it with us? You both are amazing… more amazing everyday! And listen, Tammy and i just jumped out of an airplane at 15,000 feet yesterday… and we want you to go with us next time, and take the photos in the air… we’re going to dress up in wedding garb! Doing a promo shot for the magazine… John, are you a “jumper”? Also, now Tammy wants to do “Trash her Dress” with you! Love you guys and miss you! mark and tammy

Day 8

The 8th day put us in Memphis, TN. The first part of Dalisa’s Daily video blog kind of hints to the back end of making our way across the country on this little adventure. So far it has all been so worth it….

Day 7

Leaving Austin on a long travel day with some traffic delays and a very bad time finding a KOA in Little Rock Arkansas.  Its a good thing Dalisa stopped filming her Daily video blog before the end of the day.  On the way out of Austin we shot  some more families for our project. Above: Angela, Isaac (1 week old), Kenzie and Sara.     Below:  Jake, Connor, Andrea and Ethan.

Day 6

Austin Texas!  was a blast.  Eric Doggett not only hosted us but allowed me to use him in our anti-bridal.  He is playing the cop in our little “Texas Take Down”.  I have always wanted to do a Parker & Barrow inspired theme and I have hinted at it for 2 years (this is will be Parker & Barrow Part one - version one).  Though my original vision for the shoot was a little to strong, I adjusted my sketches of it when I saw an image on a magazine cover (which is similar to the image below).  So my images here are not original but I am having fun and it makes a good lead up to shoot another little project in my head which is mug shots…. I love ummmm them mug shots…  Our models for the shoot - Adrienne and Jared - were so willing to lay down face forward in their wedding attire for us… what good sports…

Shannon and Conner did our engagement modeling.  You can see Baci running around in the Doggett’s yard playing like he’s a wolf running around in the big bad wild (we just don’t have big back yards like this at home..)

    We love ours!

I love me some Anti-bridals. Your concepts are always fantastic.

BTW…the roadside pics are turning out great. I look forward to the updates every day.

  5. Jeffahs

I was five and he was six
We rode on horses made of sticks
He wore black and I wore white
He would always win the fight

Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
    Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down

Day 5 Dallas ** updated**

Dallas - the kickoff of the workshops..   First we have to thank JVS and Anne for being more than just wonderful hosts but truly  great friends.  (BTW, Baci and Visa had a fantastic time with Chloe and Nero at the dog park, even if there was drool involved.)   If you want to see how the workshop went, just go to JVS and Anne’s blog: offcarmeraflash.  For us, the workshop was such a fun time.  I’m always at home when I’m playing around with other photographers & shooting what I love to shoot (teaching also, I really dig that).  We started the day with an engagement (images below) style shoot to explain our shooting method.  Our volunteers for that were Kelly and Joseph.  Kelly is the makeup artist for the bridal shoot. (thank you Kelly, you did an awesome job) ——– Our bridal session (which we ended the day with) was an illustration of our conceptual Anti-Bridals.  The beautiful Kate Mefford of Juxtapose photography willingly allowed me make her into and recreate for myself The Bride of Frankenstien. So here she is: Kate as “Franks Bride”.

Day 2 - TEXAS!
From Tucumcari, New Mexico to Denton, Texas just outside of Dallas.  A pretty good day of driving, with Dalisa taking the wheel for a little bit on the big rig.  From Dalisa’s Daily video blog you’ll see that she loves that guy on you tube that dances all over the world and also likes that America’s funniest home video of the wife that locks the husband out of the house until he dances…   We ended with a good RV park with a little backing up trouble, but all in all we had a great time and I am all ready to start shooting families and getting my altf thing on!

080721-0050.jpg

Cadillac Ranch!  Amarillo Texas.  I’ve read and seen photos of this place a long, long time ago and as we drove by I recognized it right away. 2 u-turns and we were praying to the Cadillac gods.

I signed one of those Cadillac’s back in, hm, 1999?- on one of our 2 month long summer vacation family road trips across country. Hated my parents then- love them now. I’m sure it’s been spray painted over by now but it’s nice to reminisce.

    Ramble on!

  3. AllenA

It looks like you made it across the Badlands :) Looking forward to the AltF down in Austin Friday!

  4. Simon Terry

    Welcome to Texas.

You guys timed it perfectly, today may be the hottest day of the year. It’s 100 right now.

I’ll see you guys on Thursday at JVS’ place. What are you planning on doing tomorrow? Are you going to stay in Denton or navigate your way into the metroplex proper? Dont forget that there’s a billion great restaurants here in Dallas.

    Have fun and stay cool!

    -Simon.

  5. Krause

We just watched the videos….awesome! We feel like groupies watching the trek across the US! Glad you made it safely to God’s Country!

  6. Jeffahs

I once saw a big RV

080720-0004.jpg

we are on our way.   Day One

phew!  rough start! if you think cool looking clouds are a good sign…. nope, rainy, windy, and our first problem.  The awning on the RV started to come open while we were driving.  We made an emergency pit stop on the side of the road and worked a  very slow repair with zip ties in the wind and rain.  Adventure.  We ended the night in Tucumcari.  After passing several questionable RV parks, we picked one that we thought we might get robbed less in. (BTW…. it took 7 different stops and 12 hours to get Visa Marie to pee. Todays goal to get him to poop.)

So day one is over and we are waking up to get ready for day 2 of the travel - 31 to go.
