A maternity session with burlesque feathers. Finding a unique way to do a maternity portrait is at best, a daunting undertaking. For the most part, it is far easier to default to the current tastes and ideas that are trending on Pinterest and Instagram. Sourcing looks that the client brings from their internet searches and trying the best to blend them into one owns style. I tend to love environmental sessions that blend the beauty of maternity with the majesty of landscapes. But we had already accomplished that with Megan’s first maternity session and now we had to do something different for her 2nd child. What’s opposite of environmental? Studio. What’s my favorite style of studio work? 40’s Hollywood glamour. Ok, next questions… how do you show the belly and tastefully cover up the rest and make that fit into this specific genre? Answer: Burlesque feathers. They are made to tease the eyes by not showing everything and only glimpsing here or there. Maybe the perfect maternity prop. I Googled it and drew a blank. So maybe I’ve created something unique or at the least an idea that for sure hasn’t been overdone. yet.

Special thanks to Megan for letting us experiment and also our close friends Jerry and Melissa Ghionis for letting us borrow their well-equipped studio to nail down the shot.

Congratulations Megan and Trevor. Welcome, Hendrix.
